Call it spring cleaning, call it cabin fever, or call it psycho Mama… but I’ve been on a cleaning kick. Everything must go! Everything must have a designated space!
Closets purged, cabinets decluttered, drawers reorganized.
Lately, I’m realizing how much my space impacts me. Especially in the work-from-home era, which I’ve lived in since I started my own business as a writer in 2018, I’m incredibly impacted by the clutter and chaos around me. Sometimes (read: rarely) I can put on my blinders and tune out the dirty dishes and piles of laundry. But usually, I can’t start working until I cleanse my space. And if I don’t have that luxury of time, I move to one clean room and close the door.
Having a kid really throws you for a loop if you’re a work-from-home mom who deals with overstimulation and needs a chaos-free space to feel creative.
These days, I would take that even further. It’s more like, I can’t even feel like a functioning human until my space is clean. I prefer to leave my mind dancing in a fantasy land where as soon as my life is decluttered and organized, THENNN I’ll live my fullest and brightest life.
I’m hunting for the *perfect* organization systems to manage my household and my business. I’m bingeing podcasts on systems and ease and freedom. Look, I’m well aware that fixing my space won’t fix all my problems. But I’m clinging on hard to this sense of control when the rest of life feels out of control.
Spring arrived! We got hit with the stomach flu…
My creative juices are flowing! I don’t have time to fully implement these ideas…
We make good strides in our marriage! I remember how hard marriage is and how the work is never done…
Sometimes it feels like three steps forward and then five steps back.
I’m trying to find a neutral ground, a state of being where it’s healthy to want order and cleanliness, but I’m not fully swinging the opposite direction of seeking unattainable perfection.
Even if I find the perfect organization system to manage my household and business, life will still be messy. (Preaching to myself, over here.)
But, seriously, I want to hear from you. What systems work for managing your life?
Give these a try…
Here’s a printer-friendly calendar for breaking down home organization into daily tasks. Does anyone use a system like this to stay motivated and follow a plan?
I’ve talked about the book Fair Play before. There’s also a set of cards to help start a conversation with your partner about managing your household. We’ve only dealt the cards once, so we’re just scratching the surface on this conversation.
Who loves a good digital system? I’m exploring Notion, and I actually found a Fair Play digital template for Notion.
P.S. I’m a huge journal advocate. Here’s a free guide I made if you want to start journaling. So I’m taking this idea of organization and systems to my journal. What do I need to feel calm? How can I feel supported in this systems management? What do I want to feel in my home? Why does it feel so important to me to have a clean and tidy space? What do I need to find beauty in my space and feel inspired?
Oh, thank you for the printer-friendly calendar! I have just checked it out, and I will print it out and try to follow it. I also feel that, as a working-from-home mum, organizing my space equals organizing my mind!
Love it! Yes, so hard to stay clutter free with littles!! Love finding you and connecting here :)
